Senator Fedor Brought Nationally-Renown Speakers to Statehouse for Human Trafficking Awareness Day Event


Many local advocates attended and spoke

Continuing her commitment to eradicate Human Trafficking through legislation and awareness, State Senator Teresa Fedor held an Awareness Day event at the Ohio Statehouse on January 11, 2010. Ambassador Mark Lagon, CEO of the Polaris Project, delivered the keynote address. Also addressing the audience was: Attorney General Richard Cordray, U.S. Attorneys Carter Stewart & Steve Dettelbach, Rep. Kathleen Chandler, Sen. Jim Hughes and Dawn Conway, the Sr. Vice President for Corporate Responsibility at Lexis Nexis.

The event featured two panels of experts addressing the victim’s assistance and law enforcement aspects of Human Trafficking. Local human trafficking experts: Mary Schmidbauer, Second Chance; Jake Hardie, FBI; Pete Swartz, Toledo Police Department; Amy Allen, ICE; Theresa Flores, Survivor and Gracehaven Director of Awareness and Training; Dan Brown, Assistant U.S. Attorney Southern District; Michelle Hannan, Central Ohio Rescue & Restore Coalition; Lt. Matt Warren, Commander, Ohio State Highway Patrol; and Hon. Connie Zemmelman, Lucas County Juvenile Court addressed the audience.

“Human Trafficking is a very real problem in Ohio. Ohioans must stop and take notice of the atrocities being committed against children in our State. By strengthening criminal penalties through legislation and by bringing together anti-trafficking groups and experts to spread awareness, we can begin to eradicate this horrible form of modern-day slavery,” said Senator Fedor.
